About Solung

Solung is the principal agricultural festival of the Adi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, held annually in early September to mark the completion of sowing and transplantation, a moment when the season's fieldwork is done and the community can only wait for the crops to mature. The festival is dedicated to invoking the deities associated with crops, livestock, and the natural world more broadly, seeking their protection for a prosperous harvest, healthy livestock, and safety from natural calamities in the months ahead. Solung unfolds over five distinct days, each with its own designated rituals. The first day, Solung-Gidi Dogin, centres on preparing and distributing Apong, the traditional rice beer common across several Arunachal and Assamese tribal cultures, along with local delicacies shared across the community. The second day, Doreph-Long, involves ritual animal sacrifice intended to appease the deities and secure agricultural prosperity for the coming year, a practice rooted in the Adi's traditional Donyi-Polo religious belief system centred on the Sun and Moon. The festival's signature cultural performance is the Ponung dance, performed by women of all ages across the community, moving in coordinated formation accompanied by traditional songs that recount Adi mythology, agricultural knowledge, and communal history, functioning simultaneously as entertainment and a living form of oral tradition transmission. Beyond its religious and agricultural purpose, Solung functions as a significant strengthening point for Adi cultural identity, drawing community members together, including those who have moved to towns like Pasighat for work or education, back into shared ritual and celebration. Its blend of animal sacrifice, communal feasting, rice-beer sharing, and the distinctive Ponung dance makes it one of the most complete single-festival expressions of Adi cultural and religious life available to visitors.
