Nyokum

Nyokum, also called Nyokum Yullo, is the principal festival of the Nyishi tribe, Arunachal Pradesh's largest indigenous community. Its name is built from two words in the Nyishi language: "Nyok," meaning land or earth, and "Kum," meaning collectiveness or togetherness, together expressing the festival's core idea of communal unity grounded in the land itself. Nyokum operates on several layered levels of significance at once. Religiously, it is an invocation of nature spirits and deities, calling on them to ensure harmony, prosperity, and general wellbeing for the community, with Goddess Nyokum specifically petitioned to protect crops from pests and animals and to protect people from accidents and misfortune. Agriculturally, it functions as a pre-harvest festival, seeking blessings for a strong crop yield ahead of the main harvest season. And socially, it also marks the beginning of the Nyishi New Year, giving it a calendrical significance layered on top of its religious and agricultural purposes. Nyokum carries particular weight as a vehicle for cultural preservation. It gives the Nyishi community an occasion to actively practise and pass on Donyi-Polo, their traditional Sun-Moon-centred indigenous religion, at a time when Christianity and other outside religious and cultural influences have grown significantly across Arunachal Pradesh. For many Nyishi, participating in Nyokum is understood explicitly as an act of maintaining ancestral religious and cultural continuity rather than simply attending a seasonal celebration. The festival also functions as a major social gathering point, bringing together Nyishi communities from across Arunachal Pradesh's hill districts, including those who have moved to towns for work or education, to reconnect, celebrate together, and reaffirm a shared tribal identity that spans a geographically dispersed population.
