Ningol Chakouba

Ningol Chakouba is one of the most emotionally significant festivals of the Meitei community in Manipur, observed each year on the second lunar day of the Meitei month of Heiyangei, typically falling in October or November. Unlike most Northeast Indian festivals built around harvest, deity worship, or seasonal renewal, Ningol Chakouba is built entirely around family: it is dedicated to strengthening the bond between married women (ningols) and the parental homes they left behind at marriage. On this day, married daughters, along with their husbands and children, return to their parental homes, where they are welcomed with a grand feast prepared specifically in their honour. The occasion allows married women a rare, socially sanctioned day to set aside the domestic responsibilities of their marital household and simply be daughters again in their own family home, surrounded by parents and siblings. Feasting is accompanied by gift-giving, with parents and brothers typically presenting gifts to their visiting sisters and daughters as a tangible expression of continued familial bond and support. The festival's specific modern form traces to the 19th-century reign of King Chandrakirti Singh (1831-1886), who reportedly found it logistically difficult to visit each of his married sisters individually and instead invited them all to a single shared feast at the palace. That practical solution to a royal scheduling problem is credited with establishing Ningol Chakouba's now-standard format: married women travelling home for a shared family gathering, rather than being visited individually. Today Ningol Chakouba is observed not only across Manipur but wherever Manipuri communities have settled, including other Indian cities and abroad, with families arranging travel specifically around the date to ensure married daughters can return home. It remains one of the clearest festivals in Northeast India built specifically around honouring the continued place of married women within their birth families.
