Hornbill Festival

The Hornbill Festival, held every year from 1 to 10 December at Kisama Heritage Village about 12 km south of Kohima, is Nagaland's largest and most internationally recognised cultural event, widely called the "Festival of Festivals." It was launched by the Government of Nagaland in 2000 specifically to encourage inter-tribal interaction and promote Naga cultural heritage at a time when individual tribal festivals remained largely local, scattered affairs. What makes Hornbill distinctive is its scale of representation: all major Naga tribes, including the Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Kuki, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sumi, Yimchunger, Zeliang, Kachari, and Garo, participate together at a single venue, each setting up its own morung, a traditional wooden community hut, within the Kisama complex. Within these morungs, each tribe performs its own warrior dances and folk songs, cooks its distinct cuisine, and displays its textiles, crafts, and rice beer, giving visitors a genuinely comparative view of Naga cultural diversity that no single-tribe festival could offer. The festival takes its name from the hornbill, a large forest bird that holds deep symbolic significance across nearly every Naga tribe's folklore, representing strength, bravery, and courage, qualities historically prized in Naga warrior culture. Beyond performance and craft, the festival has grown to include a wide range of contemporary programming: a rock music festival (the Hornbill International Rock Contest), motor rallies, a literature festival, and food and craft stalls, reflecting an explicit strategy of pairing traditional culture with modern tourism draws. Hornbill has become the anchor event of Nagaland's tourism calendar and one of the most visited cultural festivals anywhere in Northeast India, credited with substantially raising both domestic and international visibility for Naga culture specifically and Northeast Indian indigenous heritage more broadly.
