Baishagu (Bwisagu)

Baishagu, also spelled Bwisagu, is the principal spring festival of the Bodo community, Assam's largest plains indigenous group, observed in mid-April to coincide with the Assamese New Year and the broader Bihu season. For the traditionally agrarian Bodo people, the festival marks the transition from the end of one harvest cycle to the start of preparations for the next, combining thanksgiving for the past year's yield with rituals seeking blessings for the season ahead. The festival opens with the worship of cows, bathed, garlanded, and honoured on the first day in recognition of their role in agricultural life, a gesture of respect toward the animals that make farming possible. A second distinctive ritual centres on the worship of the Bwisagu plant, a sacred plant placed at the centre of celebrations as a symbol of life, growth, and fertility, around which households and communities perform their New Year rites. The festival's most visible cultural expression is the Bagarumba dance, often called the "Butterfly Dance" for the way dancers' outstretched arms and flowing costume sleeves resemble wings in motion. Young Bodo women perform Bagarumba dressed in traditional dokhna (a draped skirt), chaddar, and jhumra (shawl), moving to the rhythm of Bodo folk instruments in performances that are central to Baishagu gatherings across Bodo villages and, increasingly, urban cultural programmes. Baishagu functions for the Bodo community much as Rongali Bihu does for Assamese Vaishnavite society: a New Year festival rooted in agricultural renewal, community bonding, and cultural continuity, and its Bagarumba dance has become one of the most recognisable folk performance traditions of Northeast India, performed at cultural festivals well beyond Bodo-majority areas of Assam.
